The United Nations mission completes its withdrawal from Sudan

The United Nations spokesman announced that the United Nations Integrated Transitional Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS) completed its withdrawal from Sudan today (Thursday) local time.

Stephane Dujarric, chief spokesman for UN Secretary-General António Guterres, issued a statement in which he affirmed his deep appreciation to all UNITAMS international and local staff for their dedication to serving the people of Sudan through the mission’s mandate.

The official spokesman said that a small team will remain in Port Sudan to supervise the liquidation of the mission’s assets from March 1 onwards, adding that the Secretary-General looks forward to the full cooperation of the Sudanese authorities to ensure that this process is completed smoothly. As quickly as possible.

Secretary-General Guterres said that the ongoing conflict in Sudan further undermines the rule of law and the protection of civilians, and threatens the country and the region as a whole, and called on both parties to the conflict to lay down their arms and commit to broad peace. Negotiations leading to the resumption of a civilian-led democratic transition.

He added: “The United Nations does not intend to leave Sudan. He said that the United Nations remains strongly committed to providing life-saving humanitarian assistance and supporting the Sudanese people in their desire for a peaceful and secure future, noting that the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General, Mr. Ramatane Lamamra, has begun work to support mediation efforts.

UN spokesman Guterres added that he urges the Sudanese authorities to continue cooperation in providing this essential support.

On 1 December 2023, at the request of the Sudanese authorities, the United Nations Security Council adopted a resolution ending the mandate of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Sudan.
