Transition to democracy and democratization

The term democratization refers to the transfer of power from an absolute ruler to an elected democratic government, that is, crossing the threshold between a non-democratic regime and a democratic regime. The transition usually occurs after the collapse of the old regime and the political forces agree to choose democracy as their preferred political system. The new democratic system does not get rid of all old problems, nor does it need to open all files at once.

What comes next is the process of democratization, an expansionary process that may involve a process of backlash and end (if successful) with a new state (consolidation of democracy).
